Independence Is a Man-Made Value of American Culture
Tonight I saw the commercial for Private Eyes on ION. In it, Cynthia Sampson explains how she admires her character as an independent woman. People often look down on me because I could never be completely independent as a quadriplegic. I started wondering why independence was so valued and if it was a trait God valued. Then, I remembered that independence is a human, US value, not a godly value.
US culture is founded on Protestant teachings of Calvin. Protestantism is literally the protest of the gospel Paul brought to Rome mixed with Italian superstition. Among the many things that Protestants protested about the Catholic Church were two important features. First, they protested the sacraments because Catholic priests used tithings to swindle money from parishioners. Protestants believed excessive brotherly love would become an idol like sacraments, which a priest could not get rid of because second, confessions were banned.
To stop the Catholic Church from taking advantage of parishioners and controlling everyone, Protestants no longer believed in confessional to a priest for the forgiveness of sins. Many Protestants no longer knew if they were saved. As a result, they looked for a sign in the ability of their own works and independence to do things on their own.
In the end, I realized that my value as a human is not any less because I am not independent. I am still a priceless creation of God.
