Tempting God Is Threatening God
The Bible verse of today comes from Matthew 4. I learned that tempting God means threatening Him to obey the devil in order to show us His love.
In Matthew 4:5-7, the devil asks Jesus to hurt Himself to force God to save Him. Jesus’ reply is do not tempt God.
Because the tempting is dependent on protecting God’s beloved Son or obeying the devil, Jesus is saying that He will not force God to save Him. Threats are forcing someone to do something by giving an ultimatum. In this case, the threat was obey the devil’s command or harm God’s beloved Son. Since Jesus uses “tempt,” tempt must entail not exchanging God’s love for obedience to the devil due to the deal between obeying the devil or protecting God’s beloved.
